Governor Mills Signs L.D. 882

We are pleased to share that Governor Janet Mills recently signed a bill that extends similar legal protections to peer supporters that are afforded to behavioral health clinicians. The bill, “An Act to Protect Communications with Providers of Critical Incident Stress Management and Peer Support” has been years in the making and is an important policy change to protect those who support the mental health and wellbeing of first responders.

“I am beyond proud to once again see LifeFlight and the State of Maine leading the nation when it comes to peer support,” said Joe Kellner, CEO of LifeFlight of Maine.

We would like to thank Representative Suzanne Salisbury of Westbrook who presented the bill and was instrumental in getting it passed.

We would also like to thank the bill’s co-sponsors, Representative Kristen Cloutier of Lewiston, Representative Lori Gramlich of Old Orchard Beach, Representative Kristi Mathieson of Kittery, Representative Holly Stover of Boothbay, and Representative Parnell Terry of Gorham.

We would also like to recognize our partners at NAMI Maine, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Maine State Police, Professional Firefighters of Maine, the Resilient Responder, and the countless others who supported this effort.
