LifeFlight Teams Up with American Red Cross Amid National Blood Crisis
LifeFlight of Maine is teaming up with the American Red Cross of Northern New England to encourage Mainers to donate blood as the country faces a national blood crisis.
According to the Red Cross, some critical blood types have fallen below a one-day supply. Despite thousands of people across the country stepping up to help, donations are still not keeping pace with hospital demand.
LifeFlight has carried blood since its inception and is the only EMS service in the state allowed to initiate blood and plasma therapies. On every transport, medical crews are equipped with one unit of O-positive blood, one unit of O-negative blood, and a unit of never frozen plasma.
“We carry units of blood on every LifeFlight transport, and for many of our patients it makes all the difference,” said Chuck Hogan, LifeFlight’s Chief Clinical Officer, who is also a blood donor himself. “We encourage you to roll up your sleeves and schedule an appointment with the American Red Cross to make a donation. Blood donations save lives.”
